Greg, You do want to aim for having a gap of .0015 or so. The prick marks should be very important to hold the cylinder in place with this gap size. You want to have the flux be relatively thin and well mixed - I use a mortar and pestle. Have the solder pieces on the flux wetted cylinder. Yes use a big torch and keep it moving - try to have even heating. When the solder melts it will want to run along the fluxed surfaces so nice even heating of the whole cylinder is important. To have it be even, you may come up to temperature a little slower than you would for a simple joint. Thanks for the advice.
I assume that when you heated, that the part was supported on the ends and heat was applied from the bottom?
My large torch tip is about 1" in diameter, and I know that I need to do better job of heating evenly. Maybe you could do a video sometime to show your technique and amount of time taken to heat the parts? ;D
I should be in better shape this time, as I have 0.003 difference between the diameters of the cylinder and reamed hole. I will also apply solder the outside of the cylinder, rather than just the inside.
If I don't get the hang of this soon, Kozo may want his book back.

What you see in the photos is the part position during heating - it was not propped up to expose the bottom. I just kept moving the torch, probably aiming mostly at the sides and bottom. The 1" torch sounds big enough. Have a healthy gas flow - maybe 30 lbs at the regulator.
