Hi Pat,
Great Update.. and some really beautiful parts too! I like looking at the alternate ways to hold and machine parts, so thanks for taking pictures of the fixtures and jigs.

Great!! Exciting to see it run finally isn't it?
Must be using some CNC for some of those parts?

It sure is exciting and long overdue ... but I'm there and now moving on to the Reverse Gear section.
Greg,
I was hoping that the postings would help others as I have been looking at your flickr site a lot and it has great stuff !!
Paul,
Yes in that section everything I could was machined using a Haas CNC mill. After that I used my Acra mill at home.

I don't have any access to that (CNC) unless I pay someone else to set up and run it. I didn't like the Kozo methods in some of those cases and since I have a small rotary table I went that route for curved parts. There are times that CNC could help (those curves, multiple parts, etc.) but I can't justify the expense at home.

Paul,
Try your local junior college ... they may a shop that has a set up.
I stumble on to some CNC machines at a local junior college when I wanted to learn welding, on the first day of class we were introduced to the shop next door ... full of manual mills, lathes and a bunch of other shop equipment ... nice stuff. But the main attraction was the 4 Haas mills and one lathe. One of which was 1 year old! So that got me hooked and took classes so that I could use them. But not CNC classes (although they were available), I took other machine type classes.
Took off this semester for a break ... may start again in September.

Finally posting my build progress for the A3, Section 18 Reverse Gear.
Here is a sample of the completed (all most, anyway) and installed Reverse Lever. Still have a few more notched to put in ... will do that later. See my web site for additional photos and narrative.

Yay!!! I've been watching your site and here for updates. Good to see you've made some progress. Looks really good too.
I've just started mine. I'm in the process of making the tender wheels.

silversanjuan, Glad to hear that there is another A3 builder. Thanks for the support.
So tells us about yourself and your A3 project.
Can you post any photos? If so ... why not start a thread on your progress so that we can all follow along?
Thanks again,
Pat H

Hi Pat,
Yeah, I got a few photos that I took to show my Dad. I should start a thread. That would probably help to keep me pushing forward. It's gonna be a long haul. I'm just starting to make progress again after about three months. I had to make some upgrades and fixes to get my lathe squared up. After I started the wheels I discovered that the tailstock was way out of whack. Now I've gotten it straightened up, so I can get back to work on the tender.

hi Pat. Love the rolling chassis. Would like to see it sometime. Not sure if I'll be at LA this spring.
