Russells,
Thanks for sharing ... the Hex bolts really looks good. In fact, the whole A3 looks neat! I have been looking for brass hex bolts, but couldn't find them in the sizes needed. But your idea of changing size works and of course they don't need to be brass. Any other changes?
Thanks,
Pat H

Pat, You can find small brass hex bolts from Walthers model railroad supplies (www.walthers.com) in sizes 00-90 thru 2-56. I used 0-80 in the smokebox door latches because the head size more closely matched the prototype in appearance. The next big deviation from the original plans will be the safety valves. Kozo has written an excellent article in January, 2007 Live Steam, detailing a new / modified safety valve. I believe anyone building the A-3 should use this new design. I have posted some other necessary changes in the past under the "Mistakes, errata and changes" heading.

Well it been over 3 months since my last update ... time flies!
But I just updated my web site on the Tender Tank (at least most of it!). See phutcheson.net/ under Projects.
Also I would like to thank siggy for all his help and guidance.
Any suggestions or advice would be welcomed as I slowly move forward.
Enjoy,
Pat H

Russells,
Somehow I missed your return post on 1/10 ... thanks for the Walters suggestion and now that I have Kozo's New Shay book I will also give that a try.
The Safety valve change is also on my to do list and the suggestions by Ed and you.
Thanks,
Pat H

New update on my progress on the A3 ... actually 2 updates.
Tender Frame is almost finished! Need to do the Dummy Side Panels, Coal Stopper, Rails, Steps ... then the Water Pump and fittings.
Hope to get done by the end of October 2007!
We'll see.
Also bought a new Lathe and Mill.
See phutcheson.net under Projects for updates.
Enjoy...

Lookin' good! I haven't sprung for the copper and brass yet so haven't been able to start any "tin" knocking yet... made most of the pump though...just need the ball, spring and fittings.
I had the local foundry cast my driver pattern. Have those machined and waiting.

Hi, Pat. The tank looks great - keep the photos coming!
I'd like to get a report on your new Acra machines when you get a chance too.

And I thought I would be finished with Tender by the end of October ... should have known better. But I did finish the Dummy Side Panels (finished embossing! ) Coal Stopper (wow) Bent the Stairs Milled the Handrails Supports Using CNC ... what!!
Yes, I found out that our local college has 4 Haas CNC Mills and 1 CNC lathe.
So I took a class that allowed me to use them!
I decided that CNC would be just what I needed to machine the Driver Wheels and so I wrote the G code (no CAM) by hand. Now I have 6 Drivers ready for the Lathe. Of course it was not that easy ... took a lot of work at home. Someday I may get a CAM program but for now ... best to develop the code by hand.
Also started a new Project ... Restoring a 1928 Stover 2HP 1928 Engine (as if I needed anything else to do!!)
See web site www.phutcheson.net under Projects for details.
So what is everyone else doing? Seems a bit quiet.
Later,
Pat H

Ed,
Actually I've been following your photo site, sometime ago I noticed that you have been updating the photos in Flickr. Your machining techniques have very been helpful to me with my A3. Keep the photos coming! Thanks!
I did notice several very interesting photos ... your new Tormach.
Maybe you could tell us about the whys and wherefores etc under a new CNC thread? I sure would like to hear all about it ... looking at the Tormach for year or so ... just looking.
Later,
Pat H

Nice work Pat!
I have yet to start all that tank work. I haven't sprung for the metal yet. Should have bought it way back when I started. Prices have gone through the roof.
I had the drivers cast locally. They are machined and waiting for further loco work.

Ed,
I enjoyed looking through your Climax construction images. It is encouraging to see others progress.
Thanks for posting them!
