This is a Mountain Car Company boxcar with some added details to make it more like the L&N 1947 XM 50T boxcar that Mike wants. It will have road number 16012.
A photo of the prototype shown in the L&N Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment volume 1.
The car is built as a stock MCC boxcar with some added details. Wood roof walk, tack boards on the doors and ends, and the brake wheel housing will be moved up and a platform added before painting.

When I was a kid back in the late 40s, I was about 7 or 8 years old. I remember a sealed in an envelope note that was sent home in my shirt pocked with strict instructions to bring it directly to my parents, do not open it, do not even think about opening it, by a nosy teacher I had. I don't remember all the details, but this memory came up today.
I think this whole story started on a Tuesday or Wednesday. She said something to the effect that there would be a test of some sort or another on Friday. I said, "I ain't gunna be here!" I did not think I said it loud enough for her to hear me, but later in the day she called me up to her lair (Desks were something more back in those days) and asked me why I would not be in school on Friday? I had to think fast, faster than Ralphy in the Christmas Story, "I am going to help my dad!" "Yes" she replied, "and exactly what will you be helping your dad with?" This was becoming a bit of a sticky and I had to come up with something that sounded possible, I said "I am going to help my dad paint boxcars!" It sounded good to me at the time.
I don't know exactly what the note to my folks said, but obviously it was something similar to the lie I told. My dad never forgot this note and laughed himself into an early bender--he drank a lot in those days and any excuse was valid to get a fifth.
Well here I am, nearly 70 plus years later, painting boxcars.
After cleaning, the aluminum car is painted with NAPA aluminum Zincrom primer #7 64423 07782-6. It is an absolute necessity for aluminum regardless of what paint you use for the color.
The closest thing to mineral red paint used by the L&N is another NAPA product, red oxide primer, Dupli-Color DAP 1687, Rust Primer.
Once the primer has coated the car, I over spray everything with a clear gloss (Any of the clear gloss products work) to give it a better finish to put the stencils on. The prototype cars are painted with a glossy enamel. I worked for the Great Northern at the St. Cloud MN shops for two years from 68-70 as a machinist. From time to time I stopped at the paint shop and watched them paint freshly rebuild and sand blasted cars, and except for the sand blasting I am doing our models similarly.
I am going to take the car down to the graphics maker tomorrow and have the stencils done. This is going to be a nice car.......

The L&N boxcar is finished. The graphics were completed this evening.
Just finished stripping the graphics stencils.
The new car is moved into the barn.
Except for a few minor paint areas coming loose from the car side, it turned out quite nicely.
