This is my first post here, so d**n the typos and full speed aheda! I have been a long-time enthusiast for this hobby but I've never had the money to jump off the diving board, per se. A few years ago, a relative needed to clean out his basement gave me a very well made reciprocating steam engine; it's about 10'' wide by 1.5' and the flywheel is ~10''. His friend (a machinist, of course) made it for him out of the scrap bin and I was wondering if anyone had experience adapting these to run a locomotive. My target is 7.5'' gauge. My main question is how to set up the gearing so I don't have to gun it every time I want to move and what kind of hand brake design works best. I plan to base the aesthetic design off mining equipment, won't be adhering to any scale in particular.
