Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the live steam community and don't know much about where to buy locomotives from, other than from the for sale section on the DLS site. To be perfectly honest, I don't know much at all about the hobby in general. So, I was hoping the community here could lend a hand as to where to get locomotives from. I want to have a locomotive built someday in 7.5 in gauge.

The Backyard Train Company makes great diesels. In my opinion, many builders don't have the prototypical proportions translated into 1.5'' scale very accurately. I saw a GP40 and C40-8 hooked together at a meet one time and the four axle GP40 was proportioned in such a way that it appeared larger than the six axle C40-8! I am a stickler for detail and accuracy, I guess I am accustomed to the detail available with "basement gauge" trains (HO, N, O). You will spend about $14,000 on a really well-built, well-made diesel. Steam projects are more in-depth, since there are so many castings that must be machined to fit and operate together. If you have the money, buy the absolute nicest, best locomotive you can because it means less maintenance and problems in the future. Plum Cove Studios makes a budget-friendly kit for a two-axle box cab powered by two car batteries. Get this: it's only $2000 and assembles with hand tools! Last bit of advice: Get a really comfortable engineer's car that lets you sit back and relax. There's nothing worse than standing up after a day in the heat and realizing your back feels awful. I'm only in my early Twenties and haven't done that much live steaming, but this follows similar advice from old guys that NEED to save their backs. backyardtrainco.comwww.plumcovestudios.com
