Hello all ;D Well it is winter time and this evening while down in the shop staining some ties and bluing some spikes I came up with the following question. If a real rail spike has a head that measures 1.325" wide and the model spike measures .178" wide then is it a 1" spike or a 1 1/2" spike? I think the person I got the spikes from mentioned they were 1" but can not remember. Also, even if they are galvinized they still take gun blue pretty well, I soaked them for 1 min and they are BLACK. That was Birchwood's gun blue by the way, you can get it at any wal-mart or big K if you want to try it. Now I just need to figure out how to make alum rail look like steel!!! I'm sorta thinking of asking the folks that make aluma black if they sell in bulk, ( I wonder how much would be needed to blacken a 10 foot section of rail? ?

1.3 what ever divided by the smaller dimension gives a result of 7.44 something which tells me it is 1.5" scale.

It's 1.6" : 1' scale. 12/(1.325/.178)=1.61
