I have the car body rough carpentry nearing completion, the details are going to take much more time. 1 end platform by Ray Grosser, on Flickr 2 end platform by Ray Grosser, on Flickr The end platforms and steps are made and installation started 3 coupler installed and underframe painted by Ray Grosser, on Flickr The underframe is painted and the couplers are installed. 4 pattern by Ray Grosser, on Flickr The pattern for this caboose is from Mullet River Models. It is a very accurate model of the typical Soo Line shorty caboose. 5 interior detailing not to scale by Ray Grosser, on Flickr I made no attempt to make the interor to scale. I just filled in some of the furnishings. The car won't have a removable roof so I used the details on the inside to stabilize the walls and to have a little visible through the windows. I started the handrails--they will be installed next.

Ray, I am still amazed by how fast you build. Welding, carpentry, mechanical....pretty good hobby... and a lot of skills required. Caboose looks great. Why is each "Part" a separate post? Can you just put each new part as a new post in the same thread as a reply?
When are you starting on the engine house and carshop buildings?

Dan
I can add posts to this thread and I plan to do that. I was keeping the caboose and box car separate.
We hope the engine kit from MDM arrives early in June. We are going to pick up 2,000 feet of aluminum rail on Friday and R is planning to lay track herself. She already has plans of where to dump the #9 stone for the ballast.
I don't think we will build a separate engine house and carshop, the old barn is doing well for that role. Lots of stuff has been built in that old barn--5 model railroads, 30-40 McClellan Civil War saddles, artillery gear, an 1861 Ruckers ambulance, at least 3 wagons, and I can't remember the rest. The old barn is great for all this.

The caboose has a first coat of paint and it is beginning to look like a caboose. I finished the hand rails and brake staff assemblies today and the smoke jack is installed temporarily to braze the stand off to the jack. I used a cloth to cover the roof similar to the canvas that was used on the original but I will have to strip it off and try again. It wrinkled too much so that is on the agenda for NEXT. Here are a few photos showing the end railings and smoke jack as well as the brake staff and wheels. 05 by Ray Grosser, on Flickr 06 by Ray Grosser, on Flickr 07 by Ray Grosser, on Flickr I am using the tough plastic for the windows and all the glazing is cut and ready for the wood sash. I will be using Andrews trucks under this car from Wayne Godshall who does marvelous work. His trucks are absolutly wonderful, I will probably have to find some leaf springs for them but that is for another day.
