I have wanted to build a live steamer since i was 19. and am planning to start within the next 3 or 4 months. I am planing to build the Pennsy a3 in either 3/4 or 1 1/2 scale.
I have very little room as a i live in small apartment in Manhattan, so I was thinking of doing as another person on here has some of the parts with a sherline lathe a milling column.
For the rest there is a place in Brooklyn called 3rd ward, where i can gain access to full size equipment. What parts can realistically be made on the Sherline lathe?

The 3/4 scale version is probably doable to a large extent on a Sherline lathe, as it has a 3.5" swing (drivers are largest parts for turning, although castings might be just slightly too large).
I would not recommend a milling attachment. A Sherline mill with a rotary table is better. I suspect you could build most, if not all, of the milled parts with this combination.
The 1.5 scale will need many parts done on larger equipment; the rest could be done with Sherline.
