I tried both in my boiler. The soft coal sometimes clumps together. The soft coal smells better, If you know what I mean. The hard coal burns great, I think a little hotter than soft coal. My question is, will I damage my boiler with hard coal. Thank you

Macmodels, You will not damage your boiler by using hard coal. I recommended that you burn whatever works best for you. You could try mixing both hard and soft coal to get that hotter fire with the smell of soft. Most of all, have fun!! Bruce Mowbray Springville, PA www.geocities.com/trainhead391/

Advantage of hard coal is it leaves less ash/clinker, burns cleanly, better for your health. Also burns hotter. It is harder to ignite though.
Too much ash and it can prevent enough air from getting into the firebox. With smaller fireboxes it may be desirable to use something that is easier to maintain.
