I don't know if you all have taken the opportunity to browse the Internet Archive at www.archive.org, but I found a very cool document while looking for anything on locomotives or steam. I think this link should work: www.archive.org/details/locomotivebuildi00flanrichor browse for 'locomotive building' in the section for 'texts' I downloaded the whole pdf file. It takes you through the efficient and 'modern' process of building a locomotive at the PRR Juniata shops in 1911- starting with the side rods and through to completion with many photos of machining and some drawings as well. Fun details are included like how many hundreds of pounds of steel are removed in each milling operation on the rod forgings and full-size practice for straightening warped frame castings or quartering the drivers. Its pretty close in time to how the A3 would have been built, so its fun to imagine using the huge setups pictured as I'm preparing to machine the side rods or turn my axles...

That's a great find. There's been a lot of gold discovered lately in Google Books as well. I will give it a peruse!
