Hi and greetings;
Another Gandy Dancer here, just signed up this morning. Looks like a good time here, although it looks a little still. I hope I can contribute a worthwhile comment perhaps once in a while.
I don't say much unless I know a little something of what I speak, subsequently I could be a "gandy dancer" for a good spell.
I am a scratch builder of a 2-8-0 Narrow gauge Consolidation in 2'1/2" scale, 7-1/2" track gauge. Modeled somewhat after a Southern railroad skinny gauge Baldwin. I say somewhat modeled because I made some changes to give her a character of her own, a deviation from rivet counting to a load of fun.
She's electric powered, four very large deep cycle marine batteries for motive power, two slightly smaller for lights and sound.
A two horse Leeson 70 amp' 24v permenant magnet Dc' motor is turning presently a 7-1 drive on 8-1/2" drivers, that can be changed in a short time in the field if needed, I built it to be serviceable, but it seems to be performing very well as is.
The drive batteries are in the tender and the accessory batteries in the boiler shell. It made it's first run May of '08 and I'm still putting "jewelery" on it. This year opening day will see handrails, foot stirrups, more boiler piping, and she'll be sporting full sound at 200 watts per channel Max'cap. I don't think I'll use all of that.
I'm presently building a caboose to round out my consist, more cars may come later. As for now this is all I will be able get into my van and I needed an extra leaf in the rear springs just to haul the engine. I would have posted pictures, but I couldn't find any instruction to get the image between the brackets.
Happy New Year to all....
