Some of you probably have seen this photo in the stationary steam forum: Did you catch that Siggy gave it to his father as a gift? When I first heard this, I couldn't believe he made it and gave it away. However, on reflection, I have realized how brilliant this was as a gift choice. Think of how pleased and proud his dad must be to have friends over who comment on the engine, and then he gets to tell them his son made it. He can look at it all the time and be reminded of Robert, and pleased in his own role of raising him right. Now think of Robert's situation. That precious and fragile item is safely out of the house while he raises the family. No pillow fight or overly inquisitive neighbor kid is going to put his gummy fingers all over it. He gets to see it whenever he visits his dad, and it is like greeting an old friend. The last part I think you can figure out by yourselves. Robert will have it back after his family has grown up, and at that point he can put it on display protect it as the family heirloom that it is. I hope I didn't embarrass you too badly Siggy. I hope everyone is looking forward to a good holiday with some quality shop time. Regards, Ed

Ed, I'm not exactly sure how to respond to your post but I'm very flattered that you felt it worth your time to even ponder the gift and its implications.
I can't tell you how much joy I've received as a result of seeing my Dad's eyes light up on on that Christmas morning. And, even more joy through the years as I've seen my Dad proudly show off the engine and boast about its origins to others. Even knowing how much Dad treasures it, I firmly believe I got the better end of the deal by presenting it to him to enjoy.
Robert
