Dan, good to see you have joined this forum!
The 2-cylinder narrow gauge Shay project that you are authoring in Steam in the Garden has been very interesting. Amazing attention to scale details! Looking forward to reading the next part of the series. When is it due out? Tim

Hi Tim, For those who do not get Steam in the Garden, it is a small G1 live steam magazine published by a friend and fellow G1 live steamer Ron Brown. I have been writing a series of articles on Shay locomotives called the Nuts and Bolts of Shays. These articles are based on my research of the Lima Locomotive Works records and drawings. The last 2 issues #100 and #101, are the start of a series on how to build a scale Shay locomotive using Lima drawings. I picked a small Class A Shay with 2-6x10 cylinders as several of them were built for 2' track. The drawings are being published at 7/8" to the foot and are actual Lima drawings. This will give a builder in any scale the actual information that was available on the shop floor about 100 years ago. The Shop numbers for the build are S/N 2800 and S/N 2091. These Shays went down under and worked the Mapleton Tramway a small multi-purpose tramway with a lot of interesting rolling stock. I just sent in the article for issue #102 and that is the December/January issue. Steam in the Garden does not have a website currently, so here is the contact info: Ron Brown PO Box 335 Newark, NY 13811 (607) 642-8119 Fax 253-323-2120 rbrown54@stny.rr.com I will post a bit more about this project here, and I am keen to discuss Stephenson valve gear and Docksteader's valve gear program for any steam engine no matter what it was used for. I have been posting info about this project at: www.7-8ths.infoThere is a section for the Shay Project. Cheers Dan

That sounds real interesting. Our own Ed Hume has done amazing work in Gauge 1 scaling Kozo's climax and heisler designs down. Your article sounds like it may be useful for those wanting to scale down prototype drawings in general. I'll have to keep an eye out for that. I've seen Steam in the Garden at some hobby shops I think... Here is a 3 3/4" scale class A that we have here locally. Belongs to some friends of mine. That's me at the controls. It's coal fired and a hoot to run. In another month or so, we'll have 1,500 feet of permanent track for it on private property.

That looks a lot like the same Shay plan. My guess is that it was built using the 1985 article in MR by Allen Brewster titled "Baby Shays"
Almost all the 2-6x10 Shays with a crank bracket were built to Lima Shay Plan 1553 which is what I am drawing up in my articles.
For those that want a different gage I plan to draw the supplemental views for 2', 3' and standard gage. There are already a few folks thinking bigger with the articles.
I have seen Ed's work in person and it is really high quality. Dan

Good question on the inspiration, it was built by three gentlemen at the Cincinatti Cinder Sniffers, for the owner of Cincinatti Milicron who is now deceased. This was in the 90's so that definitely could have been a reference point. All I know is that it looks just like the Class A Shay that is used as the chapter headings in the Titan of the Timber book. Right now I'm hunting around for someone who's scaled the Darjeeling B-Class locomotive plans. In the mean time I have a full sized general erection drawing coming to me from the hysterical society over there. This is for a potential 'next project' down the road somewhere. --Mike

Mike, Ferd Mels the guy who runs the 7/8ths site has scaled the Darjeeling B-Class loco, so you might check with him. Dan

The articles in Steam in the Garden for the 2-6x10 Shay have been so far: Issue # 100 General arrangement both sides front and back. Issue # 101 Frame & details Issue # 102 More frame details Issue # 103 Ash Pan and Grate Shaker Issue # 104 Sykes Patent Locomotive (Will be the Shay engine test bed) I am now finishing up Issue # 105 which will be the first of two articles on the 2-6x10 steam engine with a crankshaft bottom bracket. The first part will be all the big engine parts and the second half will be all the smaller parts. The website for Steam in the Garden subscription info is back up: www.steamup.info/Dan

Wanting to build a small Shay. I enlarged the plans to G scale 1:22.5 from Allen Brewsters article Baby Shays 1985.the drawings are 2 foot gauge. I am wanting it 3 foot gauge. When I set my 3 foot trucks next to the drawing the truck side frames were even with the running boards instead of recessed a little. At the end of the article he states that the prototype came in 2-3 and standard foot gauge. Is there anything I need to change on the drawings to make it 3 foot gauge? Please I need someone’s input. Thanks
