I've finally bit the bullet and am going ahead with the backyard short line. I'd rather run than mow any day! I had a guy named Brian from "Affordable Fence" here in Roseburg come out and advise me how and where to put the supports for the elevated railway. I'm going to do the same elevated arrangement that GGLS has of 2.5, 3.5, and 4.75 rail spacing. I've got a friend who runs on 2.5 (maybe the only one in the USA) and I prefer to sit on a 4.75 riding car for stability, though I may set up for straddle riding like they do in England.
Does anybody else have an elevated 3.5 track privately?

Okay...
Scratch that and start again...
There is now a pile of wood in the back yard that is made up of sticks about 20 feet long of 5 by 3 inch (actual measure) and 4 by 4 (lumber yard talk) sticks.
The Plan I plan to route out pockets in the 5 by 3s to take the end of the 4 by 4 posts which will just sit on the ground. 2 by 4 feet will be attached to keep the posts from sinking. 3/16 steel strips will be sunk into routed slots in the 5 by 3 for the four rails.
Yes, folks its finally real!

The sticks in lumberyard talk are 4 by 6. The minimum length of the pile I bought is 18 feet. Being they are scrap, of course they are/were full of nails. One is badly split and I am trying that one as the pilot piece.
The plan is to pocket out the underside of the sticks to accept 4 by 4 supports with a router. Stick the supports in the long stick on 4 or 5 foot centers and glue them in place. On the ground side of the support I will simply nail or screw on a cross piece/pieces for stability.
Up in Brooks, Oregon at the track they have built there, they have simply routed out a channel and fitted flat stock in the channel for the rail. Seems to work fine and is as cheap as you can do it.
Would anyone like to see pictures of the progress?

Gordon - you bet I'd like to see some pics!
Small world... My brother recently got married and his new mother-in-law lives in Roseburg.
