It might be nice to have a utility in the "modify profile" section that would allow me to upload something for an avatar. 
Welcome. Yes, the board does not host avatar images, you have to link it from another website. A holdover from the days when a lot of people had their own web hosting. The board software is a free service, so I doubt they will offer image hosting any time soon.
