In his books, Kozo refers to asbestos gasket material for making gaskets. What can be used for making the gaskets? (I'm asuming that this is no longer available)

Try an auto parts store. Get something thin and for 300 degrees, should do the job. I watched a blown gasket repair made with liquid gasket goo. They went steaming the next day after an overnight cure.

Hello Jon, Sulfur Springs has suitable sheet gasket materials for sale. www.sssmodels.com/Coles may also have it, but I couldn't confirm. Pat Y.

Locktite makes 2 products that may be of interest.
Their 510 Flange Sealant is an anaerobic type compound. The data sheets say it is good for rigid assemblies up to 400F. The gap filling ability is .02” with use of a primer.
The Ultra Blue RTV or Ultra Black RTV silicone gasket maker compounds have temperature ranges to 500F and 625F respectively. These compounds will gap fill to about .25”.
There are a few other compounds that will work. I will most likely use the 510 compound to replace any flat gaskets in the design. One thing that does have to be considered when using a gasket compound is to adjust any dimensions that are impacted by the gasket thickness so that any interferences are resolved.
