Any recommendations for who to get materials from, such as flux and silver solder and metal? Do local purchases work out cheaper than internet purchases? I've got the first three books and am undecided on which to begin. I'm leaning towards the Heisler and hope to begin shortly once my shop is organized.

Hello and welcome. Your question is pretty broad, but I'll put my two cents worth. To get the best price on metals, try to find it at a scrap or recycle yard. Over a period of a year, looking once a moth, I found most of the large brass rods and some of the copper sheets that I plan to use to build the A3 switcher. If that is not possible, perhaps visiting a local metal supplier would be fruitful. If there are no other choices, a mail order house like Online Metals or Metal Express would be doable, but the shipping would like kill the purchase. Shop locally if at all possible. For your silver soldering needs, try Coles, or Sulfur Springs web site. For some cadium free solder, I ordered from the following: www.weldingsupply.com/cgi-bin/browsecatalogs.pl?UNDEF:: If you have any more specific questions, I can try to help answer them for you. Happy times building... Regards Pat Young.

For materials, parts, tools, supplies, whatever check out McMaster-Carr. If they don't have what you are looking for you will probably never find it. www.mcmaster.com/

I will also second the motion to use McMaster Carr. They truly have a huge selection, but what is even better is the unbelievable speed they get things out the door and shipped to you. In CT, and NY here, I have placed orders, and the UPS man is knocking on my door the VERY NEXT DAY! They have their heads screwed on right in terms of customer satisfaction. I am just a happy customer.
