Random thoughts; I am slowly building a 3/4" scale model of the first Kozo shay; and one of the full size locomotives I work on is a Shay.
I would expect they'd be ok, but, remember, all the load could possibly be transmitted through ONE axle, so you can't just divide by 6.
If you are worried about shearing teeth, I'd think that the shafts and methods of attaching gears would be the weak link.
A bigger concern is getting something in the teeth, and having them deformed. Full size shays should have gear covers to stop this kind of ingress.
Other than the fact that the colour will be wrong, why not? Then again, why not just purchase them?
Also, you can do the calculations with Kozo's calcs in the Climax book, but put an offset of "0".

john i think you answered my question as for buying them i called a supplier who carry the gears and got a shock on the price $156.00 +G.S.T per set multiply that by six i think i will make them.the bronze was only for the maching asspect as it will be easier to mill i could use steel bit harder to machine but if it is needed so be it.so the question will bronze hold up or should i go with steel. regards phill3006
