Anyone have a thought on what a completed A3 would be worth ?
Seems to me that it wouldn't take a lot more time to build two engines than to just build one.
Any guesses about what that number would be? I have seen some Little Engine prices in the $10,000 range for some of their products.
Thanks,
Wally

Along the same line as Wally's question, has anyone put together a budget for building an A3. I was wondering what materials would cost for 3/4" scale locomotive. I know it isn't a weekend project so the expense can spread over a long period of time.
Perhaps it something no one thinks about.

It's not that bad, I've probably got less than $300.00 total in mine, but it's not the money....it's the time. John

John, How far into the build are you for $300? Is that the total for the whole deal up and steaming?

Don't we wish! When you get to buying plumbing bits and pieces, if you are not making your own, $300.00 will look like pocket change. If you make a list of materials and purchase the nearest size piece for McMaster-Carr, I think the bill will be $1.5k. This is for 1 1/2 scale size. Little Engines 0-4-0 raw kit no machining is over $5k plus boiler plus piping and backhead gauges and fittings. You just do not really think alot about the total cost. It is the enjoyment of building as in any hobby.

Yo Dave, I was looking at McMaster's prices ftoday.
For sure.these little toys will be pretty expensive by the time they are finished. That's what got me started thinking about building 2 instead of just one.
Buying stock for one looks like I would have enouth left over to build another.
Making jigs , fixtures and special tooling plus setup will take up a lot more time than actually making the parts.
This leads me back to my origional quiestion which I probably didn't ask correctly in the first place.
Does anyone know what a fair selling price for a completed A3 in 1 1/2' scale would be?
Is there someone that I could contact that caould do an apprasial on something lile a live steam locomotive?
Any clues would help before I get sucked into the business of manufacturing Live steam locomotives.
Thanks
Wally

Wally, My A-3 is finished, and I'm sure that I had well under $300.00 in materials. I built everything like Kozo did and purchased nothing but raw materials and screws. It does however have a Stainless Steel boiler, which I am now replacing with a copper one. I will have about an extra $80.00 in the copper boiler, but I spent about $40-50 for the SS, so subtract that. Keep in mind though, that I had some of the material in my scrap box, and rather than purchasing it I made do with what I had.... On another note, if you don't mind waiting a while, I have bought material from Ebay for other projects at well less than half the price of even the best supply houses, I always buy a little more and keep the rest for future needs. By the way the copper sheet for the boiler from Ebay was $80.00 for a 24x36 sheet .093 thick including shipping..the best price for the same thing through the metal dealers on the web was close to $400.00...hope this helps. Also my A-3 is 3/4" scale.....John

Hey guys,
One piece of advice buying off the internet is not always the cheapest way to go. I have found a metals dealer near here in Montreal, .125" 32" x 36" copper for $140.00 Cnd . There is always some stuf you can get near home , you just need to look for it. Same with fasteners, a lot cheaper near home and no shipping costs. Good Luck.

I think Wallys question was not whats the material and fasteners etc. its worth. The question was: What can i become for a completed A3 when i want sale this loco! Or : How much $$$ are to become for a finished A3?

How much is it worth now that is a verry interesting question. The answer is...... What someone is willing to pay for it. It is like Ebay, most of you must know some deal are to be had but sometimes not, most of us are always on the look out for deals, since its all we can afford. I have been making furniture forever it seems, the last piece I made took me 8 years ( spare time ) lots of HOOOssss and Haaaaasss I would never get what it is worth to me. When I get asked what is it worth? and I tell them what it goes for without the carvings, the conversation changes. If you are trying to make money I wish you luck, but if you are trying to make something, that will last, be your pride and joy, learn in the process, make new friends, and is something you enjoy doing, and pass on down to family members then it will be PRICELESS. Cheers ;D IronMan

Ironman. its rigth . Some things are priceless for the individual and not for sale at the highest price. But (nearly ) all things have a value on the market, and thats what Wally searching for.

A FRIEND OF MINE PAID $8,000 FOR AN OPERATING LITTLE ENGINES 0-4-0 , 1 1/2" SCALE LAST YEAR. THE ENGINE WAS 5 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME HE BOUGHT IT.

Thanks Bob.
I have been turning over the idea of building 2 of these engines and selling one.
I think it would be worth it to do 2 if I could expect to get $10,000.00 for the second one when it is finished.
