What type of coal would you recommend that I would burn in the 0-4-0? Would anthracite work just as well as bituminous? Also, would you use regular tap water or would you have to use distilled water? I heard that small boilers have a problem with the water foaming if the water is softened too much. Thanks for all of your help. I just ordered the So you want to build a live steam locomotive by Joseph F. Nelson and The Pennsylvania A3 Switcher by Kozo Hiraoka from discoverlivesteam.com and hopefully they will come on Friday. I can't wait to get started on this project!!

You will find that anthricite won't work in a small firebox. I've found that for your money, Pocahontas, West Virginia is the best to burn in our small fireboxes, and I'm all the way out in Southern California. Grates made out of 1/4" X 3/4" cold rolled or even Stainless with 1/4" air gaps work great for me and all the engines in the family. Brian

Where is the place that I can order this coal? Is this commonly found? Can I use welsh steam coal? Its not really important but I am just planning for the future. Also, would you recommend that I use regular tap water in the boiler or something like distilled water. I heard that small boilers have a problem with softened water and foaming. Thanks for all of your help.

Where do you get coal? Depends on where you live of course. I'm in California and I get my West Virginia coal from Indiana, that's the furthest west I have found it. As for water you use what you get but I like the LSB 8000 additive you can get. It really does wonders on the crap that builds up in a boiler. I started using it then the last couple of runs I've been out and you can tell the difference after just a few steam ups. Brian
