Hello, I may not be able to be in the workshop all the time, but I am browsing the book and looking ahead to possible design changes, or adaptations. The cylinders in in 1.5 " are going to be quite a bit bigger and casting them might be the way, if material availability becomes difficult. Does anyone have any ideas regarding this issue? or how did someone overcome this ? any help would be appreciated or if it starts a good discusion on the subject perhaps some light will be shed. Thank you. Regards, IronMan

I was talking to Bill Holder about that over at Cookes locomotive works. He was saying how big that part would be for 1.5" scale. He contacted Kozo about making castings for the larger scales, Kozo wanted no part of it from what I heard. This very well will probably need to be copied from another design, maybe one of Allens locomotives?

Hello Bill, I was thinking along the lines of making my own patterns and casting the cylinders myself, if making it like Kozo suggest, avails to be too much problems. I have build a Gingery Blast furnace and I am just dying to find a good excuse to fire it up!! I have been CabinetMaking and Carving for 25 Years I think I can manage patterns ;D It is still early in game, but it will have to be addressed at one point or another. All the information that I can gatter will help my decision, ( like my wife says, when I mention something to her my mind is already made up ! Regards, IronMan

As a kid, I did a lot of wood working, now I like metal working. Hmm, can you cast your own grey iron? Or would it be made out of cast brass or aluminum?
Pattern making I think is just wood working blended with metal working techniques. Sounds interesting and fun. Making cored castings seams pretty complex, a lot to it I think, atleast to get a great looking casting.

I would suggest using cast iron instead of bronze. Much cheaper. A 12" piece would do cylinders and make slices for the eccentrics. Get bar stock CI for the steam chests. Also get a long boring bar and do each cylinder separtely. I am not building the A3, but thinking about how to and what to do.

You could always go with the "tried and true" Little Engines 1.5" mogul cylinder assemblies. I'm not sure of the needed dimensions of the A3 but they could certainly be made to look the same. Not sure looks would really matter in this case. The LE casting is quite nice and you can't argue it's quality considering how long it's been in use! I'd call them and order print #6 for the mogul and this should let you know if it should work for your project.
Good luck.
