Yesterday was my wife's birthday, and I completely forgot about it. To make it up to her, I went to the sawmill and picked up the lumber we had sawed so she could start digging the holes for the columns. I have been told that my presents to her, such as a new wheel barrow for our anniversary, a new double bit axe for another time. I was told I needed to go to counseling to become more sensitive and it worked, Renee laughs a lot more these days now that I have been counseled to be more sensitive.
The columns are 4X4 cedar, the lower girt is 2X6 cedar, and the rest of the girts and rafters will be poplar. We got all 5 columns in today and we are pleased.

She is at her best when working.

I was asked why we needed more car barn. The answer is we have run out of storage space in the old one. Our friend Mike managed to get a hold of a number of cars that need to be finished and painted, which will need more storage space. We are adding four tracks in a lean to structure.
Wetting down the Sacrete to secure the column.
End of the day, 14 October 2015. All the columns are in and ready to start adding girts tomorrow. We decided to leave the original wall of the old barn in place and just add three new walls and a roof.
More to come as progress continues.

Thanks Don, right we're too tired to celebrate. We would have had all the rafters done today if it hadn't have been for the three hours of rest we took during the heat of the day.
Day two 1200 hours, finishing the girt installation.
Day two 1500 hours, fitting first rafter for pattern.
Day two 1730 hours, all but two of the rafters are up and secured.
We will measure for roof, end and side sheets tomorrow. We still have to place the DGA floor and compact that, but it is coming along.

Day three ended with the start of the placement of the DGA flooring. Today we finished the rafters, installed the purlins, installed the lower track for the side and end panels, installed the J-bead for the upper track and reinstalled the gutter and drip edge.
The metal roofing and sidewall panels will be ready late Monday. We should have it closed in next week.
Here are a couple of progress photos.
0830 day three
1700 hours day three, starting the placement of the DGA
1745 day three, compacting the DGA for the floor.
Installing the side and end wall sheets is the easy part, the roofing is more difficult because of the bubble wrap material that goes on the purlins to keep the roof from sweating during the muggy weather.

DAY FOUR. I built the turnout this morning while Renee did her usual Monday morning trip to town. Some photos of the progress as of 1630 today.
The new turnout should fit about here in the track lead to the original car barn.
By 1600 we had the side and end walls up and secured.
1630 hours, that is enough for today.
The roof sheets area ready to install--we have the sweat shield to install then start the sheets. When that is finished we can work in the shade on the tracks. I have not yet decided whether to put in three tracks or four. I really would prefer just three as I do not like to build switches, but another reason is to allow for space between tracks in order to get down to couple or uncouple cars. I will have to count up what we have for total rolling stock between us and Mike.
It is going well.........

DAY FIVE
We had the roof on by 1144 this morning. The rest of the day was spent putting up trim and resting.
1144 hours of day five, the roof is on and secured.
1500 hours day five, trim is being installed
1600 hours day five, enough for today.
We still need to figure out how to put some doors on, I am leaning toward two track doors, one would of course open over the original opening, but that may be a small inconvenience. The roof is too low for an overhead door.
I am not looking forward to building the ladder track with three turnouts. I have to scratch build the frogs to make the four tracks come out evenly in the barn.

Days five and six were consumed in the building of the 3 turnouts (switches) and a rough two days it was. It started out fine, until I discovered that I had the three frog angles wrong, and being somewhat tired, I cut them loose and re-welded them to what ended up being #6s. After a lot of frustrating time wasted in trying to line these up, Mike, you remember Mike? He's the guy we are adding on to the car barn for, stopped by and pointed out that I was trying to connect the wing rail to the wrong side of the frog. It was then I decided that I better take the night off.
This morning, Thursday the 22nd, I built three new #4 frogs and laid the thing out again, this time everything fit.
This ladder is for four tracks into the lean-to on the barn, and it is 18 feet long. Too long to build on the portable track jig so I laid it out on the floor, screwed some of the ties to the concrete floor to hold it straight, and assembled the thing one switch at a time. It took all day today to get it to this stage. I still have to make the ground throw switch machines and it will be ready to carry out to the track.
Here are a couple of photos of the ONLY ONE OF THESE I WILL EVER BUILD!!!!
Here it is as of 0800 this morning with the new frogs in place and ready to set up.
As of 1845 hours today, the ladder is nearing completion.
A close up of the frog, points, and throw bar.

I no longer know what day it is, but today I welded up the 20' sections of 1/2" X 1" channel to some 3/16" X 1" ties for the storage tracks. We used the lamma to move the sections out to the car barn. Since using the channel is less expensive than the aluminum with wood cross ties, we have decided to finish the 10' remaining of the storage tracks but we will have to wait until Monday to get the steel needed.
Renee and I installed the ladder track as well as the connector from the lead, so we will be ready to start the remaining track next week.
Using the lamma as a dolly to get the panels out to the car barn.
20' of the storage tracks are in place and the DGA ballast is down.
The number 4 frog ladder is installed. We still need to level up and tamp the ballast but it is coming along.

Track one is in and the first cars are on the track.
Each of the four tracks will hold 5 cars, 4-40' cars and 1-50' car.
Late Monday in the rain, but track one is completed.
Track one with some of Mike's cars out of his trailer.
Next will be the electrical outlets and light, then I have to find a way to put some doors on.

The car barn addition is finished except for the door. The overhead door guy just left and said there should be no problem getting it in as planned. This is far better than the barn doors I had first considered using, the overhead door is far more efficient and out of the way when we want to get into the barn.
The barn is finished and the door is framed up. As soon as the door arrives it will be installed.
Interior view of the door end of the building.
View of the other end of the barn.
We are ready for winter--even the Russell snow plow is ready to go just in case we get snow this year. You have to love Kentucky, if it does snow it lasts only a short while, back in Minnesota where we grew up it could last from October to April. It is so nice to get to play in the snow from time to time then have it go into the place where snow goes when Mr. Sun comes out.

The car barn is finished. We now have 8 tracks in the dry with the installation of the overhead door.
The overhead door being installed by professionals.
It is so much easier to have something like this installed. It took these professionals only 2 hours to put this door in.
We now have shelter for all of our rolling stock and locomotives.
I hope we do get some snow again this year, I want to play with the Russell snow plow again.

That's a really great looking building. I hope you can play with the snow plow again. You can have whatever snow we're gonna get up here in New York. ;-)
