Hi, i just graduated from college and now i finally have a bit more time on my hands to pursue a hobby that has always intrigued me. I want to build a model, but have no idea what i want to build or how to go about building one.
I plan to join a club as soon as i can because i think that would be the best move possible. But i want to have something going on too.
so...
what now. where is the best place to get started when coming up for an idea for an 1/8th scale locomotive. i want a project that is doable. my engineering skills are fairly good, but i have little experience on a lathe or any metal tooling equipment. What is the best way to get started?
thanks
Tripp

try one of Kozo books on the Shay, New Shay(recommended), Heisler, Climax or A3. A good start!!

There are a few companies that sell blueprints and parts for 1/8 scale locomotives. Before beginning a big job, it is recommended that you get some machining skills on simpler projects, like maybe a simple locomotive with an oscillating steam engine. Kozo's books, as stated above, are excellent books with all measurements and detailed instructions on how to build 3/4" scale locomotives, and are available from the Discover Live Steam website. A more traditional gauge 1 locomotive 'Dacre' can be made with the free plans here. I am building this locomotive myself. When you have machining skills under your belt, you can move on to bigger locomotives without worrying about ruining a hundred dollar casting. Larry
