Hi all, down here in aussie land wood pellet heaters are just comming on the market, i would be interested to hear if anyone uses the pellets as fuel for their live steam boilers. The pellets we have are from hard wood waste and there is also a company that is just starting out supplying the pellets from pine waste. I did a burn test (in a can), the hard wood ones give off a lot of heat once you get them going, but that may differ once they are in the confines of a firebox. Most af the clubs down here use charcoal but from what i have seen it doesn't give a good burn to heat ratio. i have access to bulk amounts of the pellets as we also use them as enviomental cat litter. If someone does use the pellets does it influence the type of grilling on the firebox, i have not started my 21/4" shay build so if the pellets are a good fuel i will have to alter the firebox to suit...Chris

Chris, A couple members of my club have experimented with using wood pellets for fuel, though I don't know the specifics of their results. It did work, but I don't know the impact of more or less heat content in the fuel. They were converting an oil burner primarily to get away from the smell of that fuel. I believe they ended up using a piece of perforated stainless for a grate. The size of the holes was just small enough that the pellets wouldn't fall through. Greg
