For the spring on the lock on the reversing lever I need some flat bronze .01 thick. I hate the idea of buying a 15 dollar piece of bronze to use 25 cents worth of one corner. Anyone have that material that I could buy a small strip of? Finish size is .01" x .125" x 1-1/32" so anything a tad bigger on width and length, or even a couple strips so I have a spare. I can put a couple bucks in an envelope.

Paul, the springs aren't made of bronze and bronze won't work in that application. Their made of spring steel. I don't have the A3 book handy but the new shay has all hardened spring steel springs in both the throttle and reverse lever. Spring steel is simple to get hold of.

Paul,
What I thought about using was the steel banding that is used to hold large packages together or bundle lumber. I have not tried this yet, but it is steel, and it is springy.

It might work. Simple enough to try. Lots of things are made from spring steel and it doesn't necessarily have to be .010 thick. Adjust the other parts to make it work. A cheap thickness gauge from the hardware store is an excellent source for this stuff. Just get a .01 thick gauge or shim and your done.

Well, the master (Kozo) says use phosphor bronze which is why I was asking.
I tried some old clock spring. Too hard to drill. I suppose I could go to the trouble of making a die to punch. I tried annealing it, then drilling, then re-tempering it but it didn't work; so long ago I can't remember why it didn't work. I'm not all that versed in hardening and tempering.

Greg The stuff I see around here is way thick. Might be some other stuff available if I go scrounging. It is drillable because I've used it for various tricks in theater scenery. But it is also not as springy as real spring material, only slightly better than say cold rolled. Paul

I couldn't confirm since I don't have the book handy but am surprised that he used bronze for that. Unless I'm not understanding what part your trying to make. For the throttle and reverse lever there is a "sliver" of metal that acts as a spring. Actually, now that I think about it the throttle on the A3 is simpler than the New Shay so I may not be correct on that. I think it's just a simple pull on the A3 and maybe the reverse lever is the one with the spring. Anyway, It should be spring steel. Not sure why he'd use bronze for that but hey, it is what it is.
I'm not that great at hardening and tempering either that's why I always try to avoid it. But annealing is usually easy enough; just heat it up and let it cool. Shims or thickness gauges are the best way to go.

If you haven't gotten any material yet I've got a life time supply of tempered steel shim stock. .008 .010,.012 etc. I'll send enough to solve your problem if interested. Although it's not what the "master" calls for. It did work well for me. dickr

Yes it's drillable. Be sure to sandwich it between hardwood or aluminum. Prevent grabbing and burrs. Material is tempered ss.
