Hi all, has anyone gas fired any of Kozos engines instead of the coal firing. Is it possible?

Hi all, Ed thanks for the info. I like the idea of being able to retrofit the gas burner. Is there a reason why you went through the smokebox door on the heisler rather than going underneath like the climax. Looking over the shay it would seem that I could do a retrofit but using the climax layout. Anyway you have given me some great ideas on how it can be done. thanks for sharing this and thanks to Harlock for keeping this thread alive.

Dave,
The Heisler burner was made after the loco was completely finished for coal firing with the working ash pans. By going in through the firebox door, you do not need to disassemble the ash pans etc - it is practical to change back and forth at a steamup with a minimum of tools.
With the Climax I decided that gas firing was so much more convenient and cleaner (no dirty ash getting into your drive train etc) that I decided to modify Kozo's design and just build for gas firing. So there are no ash pans and the boiler supports are simplified. Building from the start, it makes more sense to feed the gas from underneath.
Regards, Ed
