Does everybody use the 3-48 taps called for or the 5-44? Just wondering if there is any variation.

Yes, I use the 3-48 where ever they are called out. About the only time that I do not use what the plans call for, is on the fixtures. Recently, a fixture called for 5-44 and I up sized to 6-40 for my convenience.

I have ME thread taps and dies for 3/16-40, 1/4-40 and 5/16-40 that I have been using in place of the #12-32, 1/4-32, and 5/16-24 called for just because I had them already. It has involved occasional redesign, but nothing to serious. All other sizes I use per plan.

I have only used the 5/44 tap and die for the valve stems. The 3/48 taps have gotten a lot of use. I used to substitute 4/40 for 3/48.This works on a lot of stuff but a bit too large for other things. I finally ordered the taps and dies I needed and an assortment of 3/48 screws. One thing I found to be of extreme importance, buy USA only when it comes to taps and dies. Even the the initial cost is likely to be three times higher with the smallest taps, in the end it winds up being 5 times cheaper.I got two complete sets of chinese taps and dies, metric and imperial, wasted $90.00 on them. The metric set has never been used, the other set slightly. The first sucker with $20.00 gets both of them,no returns. Do yourself a favor and buy only USA taps and dies. mike
