I get 303 ss @ amazon for less than McMaster---. It is nice machining, not much more than mild steel. Also if you don't have to put grooves in the pins they offer 17-4,7 and 316 in many small dia. precision drawn or ground. 36" or more for around $5/6. Worth a look although I've been told I'm wrong before on this forum. Just another 2 cents

Well, since you're giving it away I'll take some. (Free mach. steel) :-D (kidding)
I assume you meant free-machining stainless steel.
I have used stainless for my piston and valve rods (A3 in 3/4" scale) and I think it was 303 but I'm not sure now. It did machine very nicely for me using HSS tools.

Apparently 303 SS is a poor bearing material, for the same reason that it is easy to machine. Just keep that in mind when you decide where to use it. I did use 303 for my tender axles, but since there's no person riding on the tender, the strain on the axles at the bearings isn't too great. I'd rather have the rust protection where water might get into easily.
