On the A3, the numerous small pins (Fig 17-35) have the material specified as Free Cutting Steel. Would Stainless Steel type 303 be a good choice for these pins?
McMaster describes this as being Easy-To-Machine stainless steel.
If not SS 303 then what material was used and who was the supplier.
Thanks, Greg

Greg,
Generally Kozo specifies "free cutting" when the part is difficult to machine or is a non essential part. I see no reason why you couldn't use 303SS. 303 is considered "free cutting" stainless. It's in the annealed condition but will work harden just like any stainless. It's the easiest to machine (for being a SS).
Free cutting steel is essentially 12L14 which is a leaded steel and although it machines like butter it also rusts faster than you can lubricate it. I'd actually say any material other than free cutting steel would be a better choice. $.02
