Hi all I am in the process of drilling and reaming the 6mm holes in the left Journals for the drive shafts. I am using a 4 jaw chuck which I have not used before. After chucking the journal and starting the lath there is quite a vibration because of the out of balance caused by the offset of the journal in the chuck. How do I balance this out and how do I determine the amount of weight needed? Could I use the mill with a 2flute end mill instead? Thanks for the help.

Dave, With out knowig your lathe setup or the size it is difficult to say why you are getting vibration. It is not really convient to add weight to a 4 jaw chuck. I have done this by eye with a face plate setup but then there is plenty locations for a counter weight.
I would sugest lowering the RPM of the machine to reduce or elimate the vibration as a first try. If this is not working check your machine hold downs or try a face plate so you can add counter weights.
Cheers Dan

Hi Dan, thanks for the reply. You were right, I slowed down to as slow as the lath will go, 130 rpm and the vibration went away.
Thanks again
