Hey, I was just promoted to Fireman. Guess I can put down my track tools and pick up a shovel.
Here's an obscure question for everyone. Does anyone know if a fireman had his own shovel? Or did each locomotive have a shovel on board? Did a fireman check out a shovel from a tool crib when going on shift? Was there shovel etiquette? Did anyone ever try to claim a record for the most coal shoveled on a trip/shift?
Just wondering.
