Greetings.
I am a newbie builder. I am scaling up a Kozo New Shay to 7-1/4 inch tracks. I am calculating the length of my axles, and I am having difficulty understanding the 183mm and 253mm length dimensions Kozo gives on page 272. I have three questions: 1) I was going to allow 2 mm clearance between the flanges and the rails. Does that sound right?
2) Should I measure the flange spacing at the point where the flange is exactly vertical between the fillet and the rounded edge?
3) What exactly does the 253 mm on Kozo's drawing refer to?
Thanks to all for reading this.

Hi, I would leave at least 2mm clearance. We have a 7 1/2" club and build our track with 7 5/8 molded ties with no issues. I like running them tighter as it allows for wear and works better with the sharp curves on my backyard track. Have you looked at the IBLS wheel and rail standards. It shows all the dimensions for machining wheels and axles. The most important dimension is the distance between the back face of the wheels between the axles. Nice talking to someone. Best regards.
