This forum is for builders and interested parties for Kozo's K-27 build series beginning serialization in Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading magazine in 2013. All scales are welcome.
If you are looking for Kozo's other engines such as the Heisler, Shay, Climax or A3, please see the general Kozo forum located above this one in the forum list.
Enjoy!

Seriously considering it myself, using the serialization in the magazine as a way of pacing the build. And motivation from fellow builders building along side.

Can't wait to start reading the articles and planning my own build.

Took me awhile to find my user name...I'm looking forward to this as well.
Sorry for the pseudonym....I was registered on here with my name back in 2003ish. I don't know what happened, but I'm using my anonymous user name and the site accepted it.

Hello My Friends This looks like a very cool project. I don't think I will have time to build the engine ( up to my hubcaps in projects already ) but hopefully I can contribute to the forum from time to time. Jack

I recieved my copy yesterday via 1st class mail. Great beginning to the series. I'm a bit disappointed that Kozo will not be providing scaling information for 7 1/2 inch gauge. He feels that it cant' be scaled using the same productions methods as the 3 1/2 inch gauge model. (steel vs. brass boiler, different throttle and cylinder dimensions, etc.)

He feels that it cant' be scaled using the same productions methods as the 3 1/2 inch gauge model. (steel vs. brass boiler, different throttle and cylinder dimensions, etc.) I think that a better way of putting it is that it is not scalable by someone without sufficient experience to adapt and improvise. Since Kozo's books are generally aimed at a more novice audience it is probably best left to the individual, especially since the series will already be much longer than previous engines owing to complexity and level of detail. Regardless I already know a few people who I think will be scaling it up. Having operated a 7.5" gauge K-27, I can say that it is massive, it needs a fairly generous curve radius. If Rich Ulin still has his patterns you could probably get castings from him for a 2 1/2" scale edition if he is willing to make more. Looking forward to receiving my magazine copy. I generally get mine up to a week after others due to living in the boonies. Cheers, -Mike

Kevin Doe's 2.5" scale K27 weighs 1800 lbs with coal and water. I previously mistakenly posted it as 1100 lbs. Big baby.
It seems likely that there are already plan sets around for this size, so scaling up Kozo's plans seems like a waste of effort.

Got my copy today.
In my case a little disapointed we're not building anything until next issue. But the drawings are exciting.
Brakes on the engine and on the tender. We get to sit on the tender. Fully sprung, I think. Frame looks well detailed.
It looks like the air tank on the left side is actually the whistle. Ten tubes in the boiler, no superheater. Lotsa plumbing in the cab.
I'd love to be able to make a boiler feed pump instead of the dummy air pump, but not sure my skills are up to it. We'll see.
Oh, and we start with the drivers on the engine. Not the tender.
We'll need some castings by this time in August !
Cheers
