I just purchased a complete set of castings for a 3/4 inch scale LBSC Virginia 4-4-0 Locomotive on ebay , I was wondering if anyone has built one of these or owns one of these little locomotives, this will be my first project, just looking for some advice. Thanks

Advice: DO IT
How recently did you acquire the castings? I have the book and ordered the full set of drawings from Reeves a couple of months ago. I really like the American type of loco, but a set of Raritan castings clogging my project shelve got started first.I have learned to my sorrow that I have to stick with one project at a time (or at least until I get bored with it).
At one point I started playing with the idea of making the Virginia cylinders from solid cast iron. I order some iron and tried different methods. While I didn't finish, it appears to be fairly easy to do
Waiting to hear a progress report.

I bought them on ebay about 2 weeks ago, I have to go and pick them up yet, from the pictures it looks like all the castings are there plus bar stock, boiler material, fasteners, extra trucks, and I think there are actually Raritan castings mixed in with the mess also. I know he said there is about 350 pounds of stuff there, I am anxious to see what I purchased, I love American locomotives, I occasionally run a 15" gauge version at Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin at the Riverside & Great Northern Railway. They are a very nice looking locomotive. Thanks for the encouragement!

The engines out at the Wisconsin Dells are terrific looking, if it's the place I was looking at on the web a bit ago.
We recently had the narrow gauge 4-4-0 "Sonoma" 15" gauge engine at the Hillcrest and Wahtoke railroad in California. Tis a thing of beauty.

That's good to know, my Virginia is on hold for a while, I have just bought a 3/4 inch scale 4-8-4 Northern that is 3/4 of the way finished and want to get that going, I also have a Friends 3/4 inch scale 4-4-2 Atlantic, that I want to get going. I still would like to talk to others that have built a Virginia, Is there any 3/4 inch scale people in South Western Wisconsin, I would maybe even like to start a club in this area. Thanks, Zach

I have 2 partially complete copper boilers to the Vigrinia (LBSC) design. I have the frame together and the tender body. I see from the posts that it has been a couple of years since there was any activity. Is anyone else working on Virginias NOW.

I hope to get working on mine again soon, I just bought a house and moved, the house has a nice little garage area off the basement I am going to use for a shop, I just started to move my shop equipment there this winter. I also have a 3/4 inch scale 4-8-4 I want to get running. I need to get a boiler built for that, plus a got a yankee shop 4-4-2 that needs to be finished. Lots of projects, so ittle time. I hope to have a ground level rail road around my house to run the trains.

Hi, my first post here.
I found this board while searching for info on the Virginia.
I have one I inherited from my uncle. My dad got it for him from an estate sale, so it's managed to outlive two owners. Let's hope that's not a jinx.
The boiler on mine is mostly complete. The cylinders are machined. Much of the chassis, the wheels and axles, the front truck are all done.
Looking at having someone complete the boiler, as I'm not qualified and would rather have it done by someone that is. I'll have enough time machining parts.
Zach - nice haul!
Steve

That went for a pretty reasonable price. I almost thought of buying it for the few castings I'm missing, but I figure I'd better get along with what I have before I look at buying more: Check this out: www.ebay.com/itm/250978851548Stainless steel Virginia boiler (seller doesn't even know what it's for). Note that not only is this really bad because you shouldn't use stainless, but it has no fittings, no steam dome bushing and no stays. Steve

Is there any place here in the USA that sells the castings for the Virginia? If so, please list contact information. If Reeves is the only place that sells the castings, what is the current price in $. Anyone out there have a set of castings you might want to sell? Thanks!!!

www.modelmakingsupplies.co.uk/new-page-18.htm in the UK also sell the castings and prints. Current currency conversion is 1 GBP = 1.55 US Dollars so you can do the math. Coles Power Models sold the drawings here in the USA, but I do not know if they had castings. They are in Texas now, I believe, and no website information is available that I can find. Larry
