Greetings Y'all, I've got the book for the A3 and I think I'll stick to the 3/4 in. scale. I'm starting to collect the materials for the first couple steps. Looking way ahead, I noticed that there was a mention of place to buy castings of the driving wheels, rather than have them cast at a local foundry. How do I reach Roger Cooke? Or will it be obvious when my subscription to "Live Steam" kicks in?
Thanks and Best Regards, Dave

Hi Dave,
You'll need to call Bob Holder at Rogers Cooke. His phone number is 973-887-0084. He's a very knowledgable guy. And, his prices aren't bad...

Hello to the group. I've been a lurker for a while and decided it's time to join in. I'm building Kozo's Heisler in 1 1/2" scale and so far have finished the frame and some other misc parts to sharpen my metalworking skills. I will be starting the trucks next.

Hello: I'm new to the group but have been working on my A3 for some time now. The tender is finished and painted and the engine runs on air. At the present time I'm working on the cylinder drains.
I expect to be working on the boiler by next fall or winter. I have not been able to locate a source for the 20mm X 1.2mm flue tubes. Maryland Metrics lists this size but does not stock it. I would like to hear from anyone who has gotten past this point.
I really am impressed with everyone building Kozo engines. I have been a machinist for 30 years and even worked for Worthington for 10 of those years. All that experience still falls short of what it takes to build one of these engines on miniture machines. (I'm using a Compact 5, at home.) What a challenge, but I enjoy every minute of it.

I'm building the A3 in 3/4" scale. i'm also drawing the engine in cad for future reference...or even getting some parts waterjet cut, but most likely not.
my project can be summed up in the post tenders and turntables ~dan

I have enjoyed reading postings and am starting on a two truck shay engine in one inch scale based upon Kozo's New Shay plans. I was kind of shocked at the price of Beveled gears list by Stock Drive Products, about $48 per set. They offer a 40% discount if one buys a quantity over 25. I would be interested to hear how others have addressed this problem.

Hi all Been almost a year since I joined this forum. I lost my a3 book bought another...
I found a metal express near me in Baltimore. now I am going to make my tender wheels from steel rather than 303 stainless.
Guys any pics of any parts and doings are good as far as I am concerned. If any of yall have a spare box of time, I could use some...

I turned my wheels from 12L14 steel bought from that place. You will find that it machines beutifully. It is leaded steel. Also used oil hardening drill rod for the axles.

I'm making a 3/4" Shay, also from Kozo's book. Being a machinist helps, I make one part for me, 2 for the job. (Most of the time).
The engine, frame, trucks are almost completed. Boiler will be next.
Yes, 3-48 screws are not common, changing to 4-40's on some parts might cause breakout. Again, being a machinist has advantages. I've also re-designed the cylinder frame and engine frame in SolidWorks and machined from one piece. Been working on this thing for over 10 years off and on.
People can say what they want about Kozo's book, but the guy was great at making these models. Looks like Tsuneo Minagawa may be the next Kozo!
My hat is off to anyone who takes the time to make these works of art!

Hi All, I am starting on a 1.5 scale Kozo A3. I have some resevations about the boiler. Has anyone built one following the KOZO plans and has anyone gotten certified? Has anyone attempted to make this boiler from steel. I asume that schedule 40-- 6" well tubing would be excellent material.

Hi Gerry,
You will be safer with schedule 80 pipe. It needs to be thicker than what you want to use for the factor of safety. It also should be preferably seemless. A-106 is the spec I used as it was recommended to me by the shop boilermaker.

Hello all, Thinking of starting a switcher and would like to know how many are (or have) made one in 1"? Are there any driver castings available in 1 " or only 3/4"? I don't know if maybe Lil Engines might have a driver that would be close, any ideas? I don't think it has to be exactly like the book as the different railways had different thoughts on locomotives.
