Hi all, just an update on my progress and to let everyone know that there is life after building a boiler. And here it is!! Now onto the grates and then the backhead hardware. Things seem to be moving a little faster. Dave Barker

Hi all, Merry Christmas an a Happy New Year!! Progress has not been as fast as it should have been because of a cold and the holidays, but progress has been made. The ashpan and grates have been completed and installed. Still have to do some alignment work on the pan. It is rubbing up against the rear crossmember. The backhead plumbing is just about done including the sightglass, blower valve and blowdown. Machining is a lot more fun than soldering the boiler, although I've noticed my soldering on the small plumbing parts is a lot better. Currently working on the firebox door and then on to the superstruction Below are a few pictures of progress. Hi all Been a while since my last post but I continue to make progress. Working on the sand dome which should be done tomorrow, then onto the engine. I'm looking forward to that. Can't post pictures from this iPod. I am concerned about testing all the work on the boiler fittings. I have not tested since doing the hydro on the boiler. Since then the sight glass, blower, safeties, snifter and blowdown have been added without any testing. Probably will take time to set a test of all this gear.
Never have set a date on this project but will aim for next spring to steam it. Then start the K-27

Hi all I have a question on reamers. Kozo calls for using a 8mm hand reamer to finish the hole for the crankshaft in the bottom bracket. Question; what is the difference between a chucking reamer and a hand reamer, and can I use the chucking reamer instead of the hand reamer? I have the chucking reamer and don't feel like paying $50 for a hand version

From what I know from my own tools and from my machinist mentor... A hand reamer has a taper on the first inch or so of the reamer. This helps make it easier to start by hand. Also, a hand reamer has a square on the mounting end of the shaft. A chucking reamer has no taper on the reamer portion. The shaft is made for chucking in a machine. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info Todd I have also found out that you cannot use a chucking reamer as a substitute. A hand reamer has the taper you mentioned but also cuts the length of the reamer whereas a chucking reamer only cuts at the front end. Again thanks

Ah, yes. I forgot that the chucking reamers only cut at the front. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm calculating that at 10 mph the wheels revolve at 102 RPM so the motor would be about 200 rpm.

Thanks Ed, that's about what I figured. I just finished the crank shaft and it is really tight in the bottom bracket, so I'll run it a little with a drill to break in.
Again thanks
