I have started work on a new 1 1/2 scale Shay. I will be doing all of the design work in Solidworks and cutting as much as I can with my home CNC.

Congratulations on the new project. Is the photo on the page of someone else's shay done mostly in stainless? Quite interesting, haven't seen it before. Sounds like you are proficient with CNC operations.

Yes it is Mike. That Shay was done by Masayoshi Furuyama. This is the goal we are shooting for. As for the CNC, I am actually going to try and do many of the operations manually with the DRO if possible.

Tom,
Sounds like this is going to be lots of fun watching your progress. I visited your Blog (nice! ).. you mentioned a CNC and drawings. Can you tell us a little bit about your CNC machine and what CAD/CAM package you plan on using?
I hope that you will be able to include lots of photos showing the operation and setups.
Looking forward ....

The setup has begun. Sure Pat, it is a Smithy 622 CNC machine. This machine has done everything I have asked of it with no issues thus far. However, this project will really put it through it's paces for sure. As for Cad, I am using Solidworks for my Cad modeling. The cutter paths are coming from my 2D CUT and 3DCUT programs. As I mentioned in the beginning, you will be seeing a lot of manually slewed inputs on this project instead of feed in a G-Code and go back in the house.

You will get tired of doing your blog long before you finish your locomotive. Nice blog however. 3d studio max as a cad program? I dabbled with it a long time ago. Currently I am building a Kozo A3, a Simplex, and shortly a pennsy K4 in Solid works. If I had my workshop with me, I would be cutting metal instead of playing cad.

Hey Bill, I am actually using Solidworks to draw up each part and making sure it assembles correctly first before cutting the actual part. With switching to English units and doubling the sizes for 1 1/2 scale, issues can occur so this is a good way to avoid those issues which cause wasted metal and $$.

Looking forward to giving the brushed stainless kit a go tomorrow on the side rails. Looking for that nice #4 brushed finish on them.

Looks like this thread ended around Dec 2013. I was looking forward to it. I wonder if he got tired of modeling every single part in SolidWorks (ask me how I know about that sort of thing! lol)*, got tired of maintaining/updating the blog, & after all that, finally got tired of posting in this thread as well ?
*I tried that and finally decided ONLY to model the engine, running gear and drivetrain components & trucks because there are just way way too many parts otherwise!!
