Good luck with Little Engines (west). Clarke has been kind of iffy due to health problems. It may take a while to get your parts. He'll send them out, but they may take awhile. (I don't know how he is currently, though.)
Rogers Cooke has lots of driver castings. Call him. His number is posted above this posting.

I was kind of shocked at the price of Beveled gears list by Stock Drive Products, about $48 per set. They offer a 40% discount if one buys a quantity over 25. I would be interested to hear how others have addressed this problem. I'm interested in finding a source for the beveled gears and pinions. I'm building the new shay in 3/4" Thanks...Tom

Working on Kozo's Pennsy A3 in 3/4". I have about 600 hours of work in it and have the tender done and the valve gear is just about complete on the loco. You can see some pics of it on Dan Kautz's page at thms.tedatum.com/BBoard/Sigler01.html

I have been working on a Kozo Shay for about a year now. Progress has been slow since I knew nothing about machining metal, but it's coming along nicely. I have posted some misc machining pictures and progress pic's at the Yahoo Builders_of_Kozos_Engines forum. ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/Builders_of_Kozos_Engines/photosWorking on the Cylinders & Engine now. I must say that all of the links to the Photo's you guys have posted provide added inspiration.

I'd say that's really great for a year's progress. (from someone who has a full time job and then some..)

Thanks Mike;
In looking back at the last year, I'm not sure where I spent all of my time. Was it, learning how to machine metal, collecting metal to machine, collecting tooling to machine the metal, or actual machining.
In any case it was enjoyable. Unfortunately, my job seems to interfere with my hobby. Oh well!

Good Evening All and Hello, I have purchased all four of Kozo's books and am intending on getting "The New Shay" as well. I purchased the original shay book around 16 years ago and have been fascinated with the approaches Kozo has used in all of his projects in print. I have finally made the decision of making the Shay but due to area tracks, majority being 1 1/2" I guess that means I'll be doing the 1 1/2" size. Note I am not saying scale .... My first project, however, is to build the shop and get the appropriate size Lathe. (I guess I'll be a while getting to first steam). I have copies of "So you want to build a live Steam Locomotive"(Nelson) and "Logging with Steam" (Harris). Replies from me will depend on whether I get sent overseas or not. (Another factor in the build timetable). As another question, are there any other builders out there currently serving in the military?
Cheers from Winnipeg,

I just tried heating cold rolled steel bar to a dull orange red and then letting it cool slowly before machining. When the recesses in the trunnion plates were machined there was no bending. I have been fighting this bending problem (when one side of the material being machined is removed) for some time. It was especially troublesome on the radius rod. See pages 104 and 105 of the A3 switcher.

Cold rolled is full of stresses I've heard. Heating it relieves these internal stresses, slightly changing the internal structure. I don't imagine that if it is reducing the strength it is a problem for these parts in this scale.

Hello I am building the A3 in 1.5" scale, 7.25" G. and have only been knawing away at the tender so far. I got the trucks done and frame members, working on brake parts now. Youre not alone Jammie! Thanks, John

I just received Kozo's A3 book. I'm planning on building it in 1-1/2" scale for 7-1/2" gage. I've been wanting to start a project like this for years but just never had the time. I can't wait to get started.

Welcome toolman,
I am doing the 3/4" because of basement shop among other things... (like cost of materials, transporting the finished unit, etc.). I think I'm in it for the process anyway, as much or more than for the finished product.

Fortunately I picked up that used Chloe to satisfy my 7.5" gauge needs. I am sticking with 3/4" for the A3 so I have something smaller to carry around as well.

I've spent the last couple of days going through my new A3 Switcher book I just received. I'm amazed at the detail that Mr. Hiraoka has put into this project. Of course with the equipment that I have a hand, I can eliminate a lot of the hand work he had to do but still, his design and approach are very ingenious. I will be using a lot more steel and a lot less brass in my model. I'll probably look into buying casting for the engine wheels but everything else I thing I can make. One thing that I was hoping someone could advise me on, it appears that Kozo didn't plan for any other steam producing medium but coal. I love the smell of coal smoke but still I'd like to fire my engine with a propane burner. Anyone got any advice or ideas that would suit the 1-1/2" version of this engine?

In the do-it-yourself relm, check out this article on "Marty Burners" over at the Golden Gate Live Steamers website: www.ggls.org/MartyBurners/index.htmlBill Shields has also made nice burner manifolds himself. He hangs out on Chaski (http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewforum.php?f=8) and the Live Steam magazine web boards (The Steaming Bay) bbs.livesteam.net/ Unfortunately the livesteam forums search is (perpetually) broken so I can't easily find the link to the discussion where he shows some of his burner work. In the buy it ready to go relm, Locoparts will make you a manifold to fit any firebox, and sell you a plumbing kit for it as well if you wish. www.locoparts.net/ Check out some of the pictures on their home page there. I've ordered a manifold for my Chloe engine. Ed Hume has made small, removable burners for his G-Scale Kozo models, but for the 1 1/2" scale engine you'll need multiple burners and a manifold. --Mike
