My name is Harry Wade, known to some already on this list as "GWRdriver" (or other assorted 4 to 7 letter names), and I've been at this hobby for about 42 years. I'm a founding member of the Mid-South Live Steamers and the Tennessee Society of Model engineers. I also was a long time member of the London SMEE (Society of Model and Experimental Engineers) and currently of G!MRA (Gauge One Model Railway Association) have special interest and experience in Britsh model engineering and locomotives, stationary engines, machine tools, and in particular copper boiler building, of which I have built over 100 from 1.75"OD to 6"OD.
I have several locomotive projects in some stage of completion in Ga1, 3.5"ga, 5"ga, and 7.5"ga but my focus at present and until it's completed is on my 2X (double size or 7.5"ga) LBSC TICH. This will have a 6"OD x 17"OAL copper boiler with a Belpaire firebox. I'm presently taking a break from the boiler but it's now around 85% done with completion projected for late summer. I also have been approached about beginning to build A-3 boilers, which I have the barrel and plate forms to do, but like a lot of you real life and work severly limit the time I have to do that, at least at the moment.
A member of this board who is also on another board I'm on suggested I come over to help answer boiler and machining questions which crop up from time to time, or render an opinion anyway, although from some of the names I recognize there should be plenty of very good advice here already.

Welcome! You have already contributed some excellent posts...as you can see there has been a lot of discussion about boilers, and more input on this very important subject is always welcome, as well as anything else. This is a fairly low volume set of boards, so it's easy to keep up with. I also post to LS&ORR forums and Chaski when interesting things pop up, but I consider this my 'home board' as an A3 builder.

Hi. I'm Ed Hulshizer. I've been interested in live steam seems like forever. I've got a drill press, an Asian 7 X 12 lathe, and an Asian mill with all the tooling needed for all. I can run 'em, but I am not particularly good at it. Nobody has any more fun than I do, though, I'm sure. I know several of the posters to this thread, and they probably know me, too. I gave up on a Falk that I was working on, and sold it. Right now I am working on a boiler for a stationary steam engine that I have had for over thirty years. The boiler is a PM Research kit that is really nicer than the pictures and advertising would lead you to believe. Kozo is "teaching" me to silver solder, and the rest I already know how to do. I am a Project Manager on a Hazardous Waste site in Oregon. I have a small antique bulldozer that I am rebuilding, and I enjoy building antique model airplanes. I collect and read old books. I love dogs. I've got two of 'em right now, plus a new 8 week old puppy. I had forgotten how much trouble puppies can get into in less than thirty seconds..........

Hello Harry,
Welcome to the group and thank for offering you expertise on boilers to the rest of the members. I personally have talked to him on occasion about boilers and hope to do so again now. I just acquired a 6" coppor boiler from an estate with a 1" seam crack between the shell and the front tube plate at the firebox end. It was silver soldered and most books on boilers don't cover on fixing or patching tiny, small or major leaks. I'm hoping that experienced commercial builders or experts like Harry can recommend a permanent course of action.
Again, welcome and enjoy.
Pat Young

I am a down-under rail fan....my ID comes from an interesting time in the last century when a small group restored and operated a Beyer Garratt #6029.
Nowadays I operate a shop where I ga=ze out at GM's rumbling past; and dream about building a Kozo Shay....

"Spud", just curious, are you from Idaho? (Else what is the "spud" connection?) If so, where? I originally hail from that state, though now I'm in California.....

Hey Dale, Sorry, I ain't from Idaho, but the spud part refers to my tendency to eat whole barely cooked potatoes at camp. So no connection. steamingspud

I am Darrel Cason. I got started in Live Steam, 12in to the ft, in 1983. That was when we moved the Cotton Belt #819 out of the park. I was the asst. dir. of Project 819, the restoration of the 819. After we got it running in 86, I was one of the Fireman. I spent 10 days in 84, with Doyle McCormic & 4449 crew on the Worlds Fair Daylight, learning to fire on the main line. We ran the 819 from April 86 till Oct 93 making two to three trips a year. In 90 at St.Louis NRHS Convention, which we run the 819 to there, I met Steve Lee, the U.P. Steam Guru. I was blessed in that I got to spend several weeks a year from 92 to 95 going with them & getting to fire the 3985 & 844 in 96. We started dismantling the 819 in 98 to do a 5yr inspection, when FRA changed the rule & regs to modern day steam operations. So I pulled the flues out of her & we started doing ultra-sound testing on the boiler. Also we rebuilt a GE 25 Ton loco to running condition at the Arkansas RailRoad Museum. Any how I have given up working there. Thats another story. In March of 06 I bought a 1.6 7&1/2 gage Southern Ps-4 Pacific from a friend who had quit the hobby. I had to rebuild the loco. Get the boiler reflued, get new pistons, cly heads etc made. I found it harder to rebuild the little loco than the 819, at least it seemed that way. I am a member of The Mid-South Live Steamers at Columbia TN. They are a super fantastic group. Got to shut up & go work on my loco. Any one out there any good rebuilding a duplex type steam driven water pump?

Welcome to the group Darrel. While I don't know anyone on this board working on a Duplex pump, I believe the one on Bill Shield's camelback locomotive was made by him. He hangs on on the live steam magazine forums and on the Allen Models yahoo group. The former is at: bbs.livesteam.net/forumdisplay.php?f=5 You have to log in to see messages and post, like this board. Nice to have someone here with so much 1:1 scale experience. I have a little bit, and I found that I don't like engines too big to see over the backhead. Small narrow gauge engines are my thing --Mike

Thanks for the welcome & info about Bill, I chatted with him a lot when I started rebuilding my Ps-4. I kept up with his progress when he was building his pump. He is a Master Craftsman in my book. I wish I had some good machine shop knowledge. A file & drillpress is about the limit of my knowdlege. I have tried to enroll in a machine shop course, at my age, but it seems that most of them have been shut down, because of some kid acting up & getting some one hurt. I am planning on moving to Columbia Tn in the next year, maby I can learn a little from some of the masters that live around there. I also have had the good fortune getting to know Unka Jesse Livingston. Got to run.

Hello, I'm Bruce Frye and I am also rebuilding an LBSC Maisie Atlantice built in England in the 40, 50s? I'm not sure. The engine belongs to my 13 year old son Oskar and he runs it at LALS in here in LA. I've been a hobby machinist for about 10 years and came to live steam when my son purchased his Maisie last year online. It needs a lot of work. We got it running and are working on the cosmetics now. That's how the addiction started. Dan how is it going with your Maisie. Do you have any rolling stock? Thanks everyone!

Bruce: Sounds like our experience restoring a Chloe that came in a roundabout way from LALS. (it has a 1989 LALS boiler cert) Raise whistle, replace locomotive under whistle.
Good to see another SoCal'er on the board.

Hi; Norm Warfield here, I don't know where to go yet. I suppose I'll find my way around. I'm presently finishing up a 2-8-0 36" narrow gauge Consolidation in 2-1/2" scale, 7-1/2" gauge. Scratch built electric drive, running at C.A.L.S. = Chesapeake & Allegheny Live Steamers in Baltimore Md.
I hope to find some new friends and fellow builders here, Thanks for the ear....
