I'm building the Pennsy A3 in 3/4" scale. It's my first live steam project. So far I've only been working on the tender. I have the floor built, the arch bar trucks almost finished, and the copper sides made so far. I've made a lot of mistakes, I hope as I progress I learn enough about machining to make fewer mistakes.

I haven't worked on the A3 for about 2 weeks now. I am trying to finish up my horizontal mill engine so that I have something to run at Cabin Fever this year. I'd like to also finish the tender trucks by then but I need to buy a few more pieces of steel before I can do that. I'll try to make some more parts in the next 2 weeks so I can post another update.

Stumbled across your group and thought I should jump in. I have the 1 1/2" Heisler that Bill Esty built in the early 80's. It is the one that Bill wrote articles about in Live Steam Mag back around 81-82. The wheel castings that Gene Allen offers are the ones for this engine. My engine also has a third truck which at this time I'm not running, but soon to be. When I purchased this engine she was in sad running condition but many nights of head scratching and many hours in the way of chips flying off of a mill or lathe and she does quite well. Any one building an 1 1/2" scale or larger Heisler that would like to avoid some problems with just doubling up from 3/4", and would like their engine to pull like the engine it should, I have a few things they should look at. Oh!, and buy the way. I like the Kozo design ideas so well, that, I'm in the process of Building a 37 ton Heisler in 2 1/2" n.g. with many of his design ideas in the running gear and transmission areas. Now that ought to pull stumps!!! Brian P.S. I've a movie of my Heisler running at RLS but I don;t think I post it or know if I could but I could send it another way. Brian

Hey Brian. Sounds like you have a serious project on your hands with the 2-1/2 Heisler. I know that i'd like to see pictures of your 1-1/2" Heisler and i'm sure others would as well. I'd also like to see that movie if you are willing to send it. If you can email me some pics and movie files I will host them on my project site and post a link back to here so we can all see them.
How far along are you with the big Heisler? Can you post or send any construction pictures?
Thanks, Jamie

Jamie, I'll send you some pics on your E-mail on your site. The big Heisler project is getting the patterns made for the 36" nine spoke drivers. It's not that much bigger than the doubled Kozo. 74" long, 22" wide, 24" tall, 7 1/2" drivers(as opossed to 5 1/4"). But the boiler will be the big piece. Do these conversations show up on the Heisler page too, for the conversations going on there about driver sizes? Or should I poke my head in there too? Brian

I updated my web page, added a new date, and discussion about Axles for the wheels. I got 2 more wheel blanks left to do, then I have to wait for my chuck reamers to come.

Hi Jamie,
I heard someone had posted my web site in the forum. That's great! I have started building the Pennsy A3 in 3/4" scale.
My site gets 1000's of hits per day and 150 or so new viewers each day. So it gets good exposure.
I just started the A3 so have a long way to go. Will be checking here from time to time, but don't spend a lot of time on forums. My site keeps me real busy when I am not in the shop. Still working for a living too!
Regards,
