I just wanted to get an idea of who is building one of Kozo's 3 engines and how far along they are. If you have already built one maybe you would care to comment about the building process or how it runs. If you know anyone who might be interested please send them a link to this forum. I'd like to get as many people together as possible to keep the ideas flowing.
I'm building a Kozo A3 Switcher in 1-1/2" scale, 7-1/4" gauge.
Thanks, Jamie

We start at the moment with three Climax in 1" for 5". But we make samme paperwork and files for the lasercutter. Also we cant say not so much about expiriences with this all.

I started construction of the Heisler in 1.5 scale. Been at it about 1yr. Slow going building from scratch. I used Allen model wheels, they are slightly bigger, but they don't seem to be to far out of scale. Don't get to spend a lot of time the shop, but thats life as we know it.

Hey Brian, that sounds like how alot of my projects go. For a while I get to spend alot of time working on them but then it trails off. We would like to see a picture of your progress if you have one to share.
Thanks for posting

Hi I'm from Switzerland and I started my 1" scale Climax project about 5 years ago. I finished about 75% of the engine. I followed Kozo's design except for the bearings (I used roller bearings) and for the boiler (3.2mm copper instead of 2.5mm). There are a lot of pictures on my home page (http://mypage.bluewin.ch/heinz.hotz). Thanks, Heinz

Hello Heinz, do you have any pictures of the bearings in your journal boxes? I am trying to use bearings instead of bushings in my trucks and I am looking for ideas.
Thanks, Jamie

I have a 1" scale A3 pennsy under construction, cut the axles, working on the wheels. Construction has halted since I am now working on a zero settable backplate for the new Bison chuck I have for my lathe IF those axles are not right, well, I'll just make new ones out of drill rod.

Jamie Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of my Climax journal boxes and for the moment I can't find my old drawings. For the first version of the trucks I used bronze bearings (ID = 10mm, OD = 16mm) but I was not satisfied with the result (too much friction). So I replaced the bronze bearings by roller bearings from SKF (ID = 8mm, OD = 16mm, width 5mm). To get a robust design I used 2 bearings per journal box (mounted back to back). Heinz

This is great, keep the messages coming. We would like to get as many people together here as possible so that we know who is building a project based on Kozo's designs.

My name is Bill Hinkle and i am building a class c three truck Climax in 1.6 scale as presented in Live Steam magazine. I am machining the cylinders from 35 lb weights from Wal-mart. the cast iron they are poured with is fair and have only found one inclusion in the first one and none in the second one. With the exhaust grouve in the middle and a cast iron sleve pressed in i don't think it will be a problem. Making a pattern for the 8 spoke wheels which i will send to Cattail foundry in Pa for casting and hope to pick them up when i go to Cabin Fever in Janurary.

I have just found this site as I intend to start on a Heisler in 5" guage........I am a member of Rugeley Power Station Model Engineering Soc in England. We have a raised track of about 2000ft for 3.5"....5" and for light 7 1/4 guage locos, We have no web site but live steam is alive and well in the UK. At present I am finishing off a 3.5in Conway saddle tank loco and when this is finished I will be starting on the Heisler
Nice to find you and I will keep in touch.

I am reading the Penny-Switcher book, and want to build it in 80% of the design -> target 2.750" gauge, and just found out about "F" scale which is 2.781" gauge, but I'm having trouble finding manufactured track at this size, any suggestions? Anyone else interested in this gauge?

I oompleted my Pennsy A3 switcher in 3/4 " scale about 3 years ago after about 3 1/2 years of spare time work. Since then I have built 1" scale electric powered F7 diesel A & B units from scratch, 2 passenger cars and 350 ft of elevated 3 1/2 "/ 5" gauge track around my house. About a month ago I started on the 1.6" scale climax currently being featured in Live steam Magazine. I would love to hear from and compare experiences withothers working on this project.
